Hello all. I am new to the irrigation world, but quickly learning there is a lot to learn. I am in the process of designing a system for my residence. I have roughly 20 acres with a pond and wish to construct a small putting green near my pond while irrigating at least a 60-ish yard "fairway" approach.

Eventually I intend on building a home near this area on my property. My biggest hurdle currently is electricity. I really have no need for another electrical drop at this stage as I am probably five years out from building. But I also want to make it pretty to carry my wife's faith that a new home will actually, eventually materialize. Green grass, trees/shrubs planted, etc.

My issue involves horizontal distance on the suction side of the pump. I understand suction lift and it should not be a problem. But is there any reason why I cannot install a suitable pump in an existing outbuilding on the property that has electrical service already and return it to the area I desire.

I have a DitchWitch at my disposal already so that portion would be "free". So I am thinking why can I not just install the pump in the outbuilding and toss both the suction and pressure line in the same trench from the outbuilding to the pond.

Is there a maximum horizontal distance limitation on the suction side of a pump? My pump would be about 150 yards from the pond. I am not immediately concerned about priming because I already have a secondary water supply at the outbuilding to assist with the primary fill of the new line. I figure a couple of check valves near the pick up at the pond will be necessary as a preventive measure against leak off and future loss of prime.

I am coming up to speed on Total Dynamic Head and friction loss. I understand them to be nearly a bare minimum without elbows and pipe size changes, etc.

I will remain prayerful someone out there can provide some guidance. All the best...
